The ForMovFluid team joined a FAU field course to Iceland, with supervisors Barbara and Daniel, and PhD researchers Elisa, Lisa, and Yessica taking part alongside FAU Master’s students and two other PhD researchers.

With Barbara’s experience of working in Iceland, we explored geothermal energy production through visits to several power plants. At Fagradalsfjall, together with Ed Marshall (FAU), we mapped lava flows from the 2020-2023 eruptions.

Daniel Koehn introduced us to Iceland’s extensional tectonics, including the opening between the North American and Eurasian plates and the formation of graben structures.

Beyond the geology, the trip offered breathtaking landscapes, hikes, waterfalls, puffins, whales—and a spectacular Northern Lights display on our very first night!
